Isaac Mendez |

Played By: Santiago Cabrera
Ability: Predict The Future via His Paintings
Age:
An artist by trade, Isaac battles with a drug addiction pushing him and his girlfriend, Simone Deveraux, further and further apart. Unfortunately, his addiction also has a positive side - he can paint the future when he's high.
What We Know
Episode 1x01 - "Origins"
- Isaac is dating Simone, but hasn't been honest with her about having relapsed back into heroin use.
Feats: Isaac painted a burning bus which turned out to be a bus that had been bombed in Israel. He also painted a train wreck which we learned was the train wreck in Odessa Texas that Claire Bennet was at. Isaac also painted a piece depicting a man jumping off of a building which Peter Petrelli sees and realizes is himself.
Episode 1x02 - "Don't Look Back"
- Isaac tells Simone that he had a dream in which he saw New York destroyed by a bright light, but she thinks it's the drugs talking.
- Isaac is apparently murdered with the top of his skull missing (like Sylar's other victims). Though we learn that this happens five weeks in the future because Hiro has traveled forward in time to witness it.
Episode 1x03 - "One Giant Leap"
- Simone Deveaux is collecting Isaac’s paintings, planning to sell them to raise enough money to put him through rehab. The editors of his comic book are becoming anxious about production delays. Isaac doesn’t want to go into rehab. He needs to paint the future so that he can discover how to stop the coming holocaust he has painted on his floor. Simone believes the visions mean nothing more than that he’s indulging too much. Isaac doesn’t want to lose her, but he can’t stop. Simone breaks off the relationship and leaves. Isaac’s cell phone rings. Someone on the other end speaks excited Japanese, and Isaac yells at him to stop calling.
- Isaac turns to a page in his sketch book showing a drawing of Simone and Peter kissing in the rain under an umbrella. Despondent, he considers shooting up again.
Episode 1x04 - "Collision"
- Isaac asks Simone for an advance for "painting supplies" and confronts her about Peter, finally ending up back at his painting of New York going up in a big mushroom cloud. Then after she storms off, he says the perhaps prophetic words, "I'm gonna be a hero." He immediately begins setting up canvases and paint and shoots up. We get a glimpse of how Isaac's future painting really works, by him going into a trance, seeing in real time what's going to happen, then his body painting the scene. This time he's painting a cheerleader, presumably Claire, being chased up the steps near her high school, by a large shadowy figure.
Episode 1x05 - "Hiros"
- Isaac’s studio, Manhattan. Isaac, looking pale and exhausted, putters with paints and brushes. Peter enters, asking for help. Isaac suggests he turn to Simone, since Peter took her away from Isaac. Pete had to come because he’d been told that Isaac knew what he had to do next, where he had to go. Peter believes Isaac can paint the future because Pete’s special too. Isaac, unconvinced and not very cooperative, invites him to examine the paintings he’s done. Pete wanders through the gallery until he finds the one of Claire on the auditorium steps, menaced by a shadow. It’s the cheerleader future Hiro told him about.
- Peter has set up Isaac’s canvasses against the wall, forming a comic book page. Isaac doesn’t know who the cheerleader is. He doesn’t know anything because he was high when he painted the panels. He’s been doing a lot of drugs since painting the explosion on his studio floor, trying to find out how to stop the bomb, but all he’s gotten are the comic panels and he doesn’t understand what they mean. The drugs have cost him all his money and Simone too. He’s discouraged. Peter knows that the paintings are the key. The panel at the bottom right is unfinished. Isaac can’t finish it because he’s out of drugs, and unless Peter wants to make a donation… Pete declines. Instead he stares at the painting and begins to see an image. Peter can finish it. He drew the stick figure drawing of himself and Nathan on the hospital roof before it happened. Isaac is stunned. Peter grabs a brush and paint, closes his eyes and relaxes. When he opens them again, they’ve gone white and he begins to paint in the missing parts of the canvas.
- Hiro stands outside the car, idly tossing the keys. Ando approaches. After a few moments of awkward silence, Ando suggests that they try calling Isaac again.
- Peter, his eyes back to normal, and Isaac crouch down together, staring at the completed painting. It shows a dark figure in a baseball cap casting a long shadow over the body of a cheerleader with the top of her head cut off. Peter has no idea how he painted it. Isaac is stunned, but is convinced that they have to save her. The phone rings. Isaac wants to ignore it. It’s just some Japanese guy who keeps leaving messages. Peter stares at the phone, and then runs over to answer it. It’s Hiro. Pete introduces himself and tells Hiro, “I have a message for you…”
Episode 1x06 - "Better Halves"
- A look at Isaac’s prophetic paintings, including one of Niki face down on the floor. Mohinder’s voiceover indicates that evolution is imperfect, violent and cares nothing about right or wrong: it’s a fight to survive. In a replay of the close of the previous episode, Peter and Isaac stare at the painting of a dark figure in a baseball cap casting a long shadow over the body of a cheerleader. Isaac is convinced that they have to save her. The phone rings. Isaac wants to ignore it. It’s just some Japanese guy who keeps leaving messages. Peter stares at the phone, and then runs over to answer it. It’s Hiro. Pete introduces himself and tells Hiro to save the cheerleader and save the world. At Isaac’s prompting, Peter tells Hiro about his future self.
- Cut to Hiro and Ando in their car. Ando translates as Hiro listens. Hiro is very impressed that his future self has a sword. Hiro and Ando want to know what cheerleader and where they can find her. Neither Isaac nor Peter know the answer, but suggest Hiro and Ando come to New York while they find out. The top left (first) panel is missing from the painting layout that Peter and Isaac have created. Isaac remembers painting a canvas of the right size a few weeks ago, but Simone took it to sell. Isaac can’t remember what was on it because he was high at the time. Peter picks up the phone to try to get it back.
- Isaac leans over a painting of Niki as she appears at the end of the scene above. He sees something wrong with the paint on her shoulder and rubs it away with his finger to reveal the half-helix symbol. His doorbell rings and he opens it to find Eden outside. She’s a big fan of his work…
