  • Sanders house, Las Vegas. Niki enters and calls for Micah, but finds two strange men and a police officer in her living room. Micah and Texas Tina are in the kitchen with more policemen. The cops showed up a little while ago looking for D.L. A detective shows Niki a picture of her husband. D.L. was spotted nearby an hour ago, and the police want to know if he’s tried to make contact. Micah protests that his father’s innocent, but Niki hushes him. Niki thinks the police should have caught him months ago. They had, and had him in custody two days ago but D.L. slipped his cuffs and escaped. Niki grows agitated. D.L. is a killer. He’s been following her and he’s done things. When the detective tries to find out what he’s done, Niki dodges the question and demands protection. If D.L. is nearby, then he’s come for something and Niki won’t be able to stop him. A radio call interrupts to announce that a male has been spotted heading toward the back door. The police take up positions with guns ready. The door opens and in walks Ando. He raises his hands slowly, confused, sees Niki and waves very carefully.
  • Ando sits, handcuffed and surrounded by cops. Niki recognizes him from her web site, knowledge of which makes the detective roll his eyes. Since they have chatted so much online, Ando has come to her hoping that she could help him. The persona Niki projects on the web is not who she is. Ando now understands this. The cops could hold him for trespassing, but they let him go at Niki’s urging. The police leave a car out front in case D.L. shows. Niki goes into Micah’s bedroom to kiss him goodnight and then comes out again. She stops in the hallway, thinking she heard or saw something, but a look in the kitchen shows that nobody is there. She turns back to Micah’s room and the camera pans to show D.L. now standing just around the corner in the kitchen she just left.

Episode 1x06 - "Better Halves"

  • Niki, sleeping with Micah in his room, awakens suddenly as though she’s heard something. She gets up and begins looking through the house. The police car is still parked outside her front door, and the cops in it are still awake. D.L. appears suddenly behind her. Niki doesn’t know how he got in. D.L. grabs her and pulls her around a corner, but the way he holds her isn’t threatening. If Niki screamed, the cops would catch him, so he hopes she doesn’t scream. She’s not wearing her wedding ring, although D.L. is wearing his. They argue about whether he should be there. The police overhear and knock on the door. D.L. goes to check on Micah, leaving Niki to deal with the cops any way she wants. At first she assures the policeman at the door that everything is alright, and that she was just talking with her son, but the hesitation in her voice arouses the officer’s suspicions. Niki quickly excuses her behavior as the product of a long night, and the officer leaves.
  • D.L. again appears behind Niki, who demands to know what really happened. He had planned to rob Linderman for $2 million, enough money to solve D.L., Niki and Micah’s financial problems and get them out of Vegas. However, he realized Linderman would come after Niki and Micah as well as D.L. D.L. backed out, but someone else took his place. D.L. heard that it was a woman. The woman took the money and killed D.L.’s crew. A man in North Vegas just laundered $2 million for someone, and D.L. plans to go the next day to shake out her name.
  • Niki gathers up bedding for D.L., who was planning on sleeping with Niki. He doesn’t know what she’s been through in the six months he’s been gone. He didn’t want to leave, but $30K a year wasn’t enough for him to raise a family on. Niki’s angry that she “became another person,” after he left, but D.L. knows she’s been internet stripping. He’s alright with it because Niki did what she had to do. Niki relents and allows him to stay the night, but he has to leave in the morning. D.L. beds down on the couch, playing with his wedding ring. In her room, Niki gets her own wedding ring from her jewelry box and puts it back on her finger. After a few minutes thought, she invites D.L. to come to bed and they fuck the hell out of each other through the night.
  • Niki and D.L. wake up in each other’s arms in the morning. D.L. suggests that Niki get more sleep, since she didn’t get much the night before. He heard her get up in the middle of the night, quietly so she wouldn’t wake him. Niki has no memory of getting up. Worried that she may have had another blackout, she sits up and glances at the mirror. She sees "Jessica" lying in bed on D.L.’s other side. "Jessica" gives her a sly smile. Micah barges into the room and, at the sight of his father, jumps up on the bed. They’ve missed each other.
  • D.L. and Micah sit at a table on the back porch while D.L. looks through some of Micah’s comic collection. D.L. remembers when Micah got scared after reading some of D.L.’s old Tomb of Horror and Vault of Doom comics even though D.L. told him not to. D.L.’s sorry he hasn’t been around, but Micah’s been the man of the house, taking care of Niki, and she’s been doing alright. Micah wants to know how D.L. got out of prison, so D.L. tells him he just walked out. He’s got a secret, just like Superman. Micah accepts this and goes to get more comics. Niki brings coffee out onto the porch. When D.L. goes back on the run, it’s going to crush Micah. D.L. doesn’t worry because he’s not going to run again. He’s going to get the woman’s name from the money launderer and prove he’s innocent. He needs Niki to give him a ride, though. Every cop in Vegas is looking for him, and he knows that although Niki is starting to believe him, she’s going to start to doubt again the moment he’s not there to reassure her.
  • Niki pulls up outside, scouts the area and then signals D.L. that it’s okay to climb out of his hiding spot in the back seat. They go down a flight of outside stairs to a door that is locked when D.L. tries it. Niki’s nervous, but D.L. knows these people from when they all used to work for Linderman. Niki is distracted a moment by distant sirens, and when she looks again, D.L. has opened the door. They walk into the poker den to see that it has been trashed and the three poker players have been bloodily torn apart. They leave quickly.
  • D.L. gives Niki a drink. They’re both shaken. D.L. has never seen anything like the scene in the poker den. Niki has, in their garage. She borrowed money from Linderman when she got behind in rent and tuition, and he sent men to get it back. It got physical, she blacked out, and when she came too, the men had been torn apart. There wasn’t anyone else around, so it must have been her. D.L. doesn’t believe it. He thinks they’re both being framed, but whoever is doing it hasn’t counted on the bond between the two of them. Niki wants to call the police, but D.L. knows they won’t believe the story. He’s got to find the woman who framed him to clear his name. Micah interrupts the moment, asking Niki’s help to find his backpack. Niki finds it in the living room. Niki sees "Jessica" in the living room mirror. A moment later, Niki’s sitting on the couch, and the backpack is gone. Micah has it in his bedroom. Niki had given it to him and told him to pack clothes for a trip to Grandma’s house. Niki doesn’t remember. Shaken, she fakes illness and goes to her bedroom where she collapses in front of the mirrored closet doors. She asks her reflection what’s happening to her, then sinks to the floor when there’s no answer. "Jessica" appears, sitting next to her, far more composed than Niki. Niki thinks she’s a hallucination, but "Jessica" is as real as Niki and although Niki may be a lot of things, she’s not crazy.
  • Micah’s room. D.L. enters looking for Niki. Micah wants to know if Niki and D.L. are going to get back together. D.L. would like that, but Niki doesn’t really believe he’s innocent, and that complicates things. He’d like them to be a family again. Micah tells him that D.L. isn’t the only one with a secret. Niki has one too.
  • "Jessica" threatens Niki with what D.L. would do should he find out what Niki and "Jessica" have done. They framed D.L. and stole the $2 million. They also killed D.L.’s crew and the men at the poker den to eliminate the witnesses. The thugs were killed in self-defense. "Jessica" did what had to be done, and she tells Niki what has to be done now: she has to take the money and get as far from D.L. as she can. Niki’s horrified and insists that D.L. can protect her. "Jessica" knows that D.L. will think Niki’s crazy and then he’ll try to take Micah away. Niki chooses to get the money instead of letting D.L. take her son away.
  • Niki finds a suitcase full of money and a gun in the attic. D.L. appears behind her as she pulls it out. She tries to explain, but D.L. is convinced that she’s been lying to him about everything and that she’s the source of all his trouble. He tells her he’s taking Micah and the money. The confrontation brings out "Jessica", who throws D.L. across the room and into the closet. Micah hears the racket and comes running, but "Jessica" sends him back to his room with the excuse that she and his father are moving furniture. D.L. has vanished. Niki closes the door and stalks the room trying to find him. D.L., battered, melts out of the wall and grabs her from behind. "Jessica" breaks his hold and throws him onto the bed, then jumps on top and begins to strangle him. The half-helix symbol has appeared on her shoulder. Micah opens the door and is shocked to see what is happening. His appearance distracts "Jessica" long enough for D.L. to reach into her chest. Whatever he does there causes "Jessica" difficulty breathing, and she collapses on the floor. Micah tries to run to her, but D.L. catches him up and runs out the door with him. "Jessica"/Niki lies on the floor, either disabled or dead.
