On The Web : What People Are Saying About Last Night's Episode

Posted by HeroesFan on 2006/11/21 17:32:40 (509 reads)
On The Web

Well Heroes fans, its that time again. Time where we take a quick peek at what people online are saying about our beloved show, good and bad. The following excerpts have all been posted within the past few hours and are mostly from personal blogs, with some TV 'critic' type sites thrown in for good measure.

While you may not agree with what a lot of the people are saying (I know I don't) it is sometimes fun to see what other people think of the show. Oh yeah, and since these are from blogs, you can always leave a comment telling the author just how you really feel (if you are so inclined).

Saving the cheerleader a bit over-hyped

Save the cheerleader, Save the world,? was the resounding message preceeding last night?s episode of Heroes. But, in all honesty, I gotta admit that I felt the hype left me feeling let down. I can only walk away scratching my head and wondering if there was something more to the episode.

Heroes - Chapter 9 - Homecoming was Very Predictable

Heroes is often very predictable. Don?t get me wrong I love Heroes, but at times it is predictable. Here is a list of all the things from last night?s episode that I predicted before they happened:

Heroes

I swear...I'm addicted to this show. I LOVE it.....now I know I can watch it if I miss it...it's on the NBC website...and I love it!!!!!

Our Heroes Are Dumb But Addictive
NBC's Heroes is one of the few breakout hits of the new TV season, and last night was its so-called fall finale. We know people are watching ? some 14 million a week ? but the question remains: Is it actually any good? New York pop-culture experts Adam Sternbergh and Emily Nussbaum tuned in last night to consider the question.

Less-Than-Super "Heroes": What Keeps Me Watching
At this point, I can only credit my attraction to the fact that the producers are pulling every trick in the book ? super powers, cliff hangers, hot girls, charismatic guys, sex, lies and paradoxes. I?m not the only one they?ve got, either ? the ratings on Heroes are roughly twice that of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which airs immediately afterwards, and I think that show?s incredible.

Heroes and other stuff....
Wow! If you haven't checked out the new show on NBC called "Heroes," I highly recommend that you do. The writing for the show is quite good, and the ensemble cast does a great job with their respective characters. If you've read JMS' "Rising Stars," then you will be familiar with the kind of story threads at work

Save the cheerleader, save ... hey, wait a minute
The cheerleader was, in fact, saved. As for the world? Um, yeah, get back to you on that. And given the subject of Isaac's latest painting (more on that in a bit), I'm guessing there's work yet to be done.

Networks over-promising on episodes of their big series is nothing new, as any regular viewer of Lost can attest, probably for hours on end. But it's deeply annoying, despite (or maybe partly because of) the fact that we should know better by now for having been burned in the past.

Dear Jeff Loeb
Dear Jeff Loeb, or NBC, or whoever calls the shots over at Heroes

I don't give a rat's [explative deleted] about Mohinder, or Ali Larter or her stupid family. Please quit wasting precious time with them. You only have an hour with me each weak, i beg you; stop wasting our time with these [explative delted] dead beat, painfully acted scenes. You are killing me, for real.

Anyone who follows Hiro's online blog may have noticed something worrisome. Since Hiro has teleported back in time to try and save Charlie ... well .. his blog seems to have been erased. Now all we get is the following message.

On The Web : Get Your Own Kanji Clock

Posted by HeroesFan on 2006/11/13 15:16:58 (3782 reads)

Practice your space/time manipulation powers on this replica Kanji Clock. Made to resemble the clock sitting on Hiro's desk, the one he caused to stop ticking when he first discovered his power. The Kanji Clock also features the mysterious "symbol" at the very center of its design.

If you concentrate long enough we guarantee that you too will be able to stop the Kanji Clock from ticking. If not by your mastery of the space time continuum, then by the fact that it will eventually need to have its battery replaced.

Get yours today!

On The Web : Would You Really Want A Power?

Quote:

What about the ability to fly? That's sweet. Let's say it's January, 37 degrees and raining. But in Maui it's 81 degrees and the girls are frolicking in the surf. Boom, you're there. But did you think about your wardrobe before flying? You just can't fly at 30,000 feet without a fleece outfit and ear muffs. And when you get to Maui, you're going to look pretty silly in your woollies. So, on second thought, nix flying.

Next.

I hate the idea of hearing people's thoughts. I'd rather not know what people are thinking about my rapidly advancing hair loss. Just like "Heroes" Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg), who's thinking he's all that when he can read his wife's thoughts - until he finds out she's been cheating on him.

Ziiiiing .... that hurt.

Next.

The idea of being a painter always appealed to me, but I don't desire to be some cranked-up dude like Isaac who's paintings are Armageddon-like.

Anyway, my idea of the future is twisted. For instance, my paintings would depict: The San Francisco Giants actually winning a World Series; "Baywatch" in 3-D; square hamburgers.

What else?

Niki (Ali Lanter) is two people - Good Niki and Bad Niki. Now, it gets a little confusing because Good Niki is an online stripper with a husband in prison. Bad Niki? She sleeps with strangers, kills people and, generally, is tough to be around.

See the dilemma?

Do I want those superpowers? Not really. Besides, I already have two me's. There's Morning Greg - "Don't talk to me. Where's the paper? Where's the bathroom? See you in half-an-hour." Then there's Evening Greg - "Where's my dinner? Where's my remote? Where's my dog?"

So you can see why all of these characters aren't too happy about having these superpowers. I mean it's cool to be able to fly, but do you have somewhere to fly? And think of all the responsibility that comes with superpowers.

On The Web : Hiro's Latest Blog Entry

Quote:

Thank you everyone for your good kharma, support, and advice.

Ando-kun is back and we're now a party of two again. \(^.^)X(^.^)/

We're finally on our way to New York but I leave Las Vegas with a couple of
questions. Recently I talked to a Peter Petrelli on the phone.

1) Who is Peter Petrelli?
He said he met a future me who told him to deliver a message to me. I guess
he is important to my mission otherwise future me wouldn't have come talk to
him. I also met flying man Nathan who is also a Petrelli. Are they related
or is it just common last name?

2) Who is the Cheerleader?
Future me said, or maybe it's will say to be exact. I don't know what the
correct tense would be \(- -)/ Anyways, he said, or I said, (?.?) ...,
save the cheerleader, save the world. So saving this cheerleader would save
Mr. Isack? Even though he/I will/was very cryptic he/I should've not
interacted with someone from my current timeline. I'm disappointed. He/I
should've known/should know the negative ramifications of time travel.
(>.<)

3) What kind of sword?
\(^o^)/
I have a sword in the future! (^o^)==[=============>
Is it a broadsword? A machete? A katana? If I know myself, I'd choose a
katana. I wonder if it's magical. +4 to dexterity? I guess my character
breakdown would be:

Hiro (Future)
STR: 14 (I'm going to have to work out more to get this)
DEX: 18 (with +4 modifier) (ditto as above)
CON: 12
INT: 18 (I can use magic)
WIS: 17 (I survive till the future so I have to be wise (^o^))
CHA: 15
Race: Human (Japanese)
Alignment: Lawful Good
AC: -1 (I would think that I would be wearing lighter gear, but get AC
dexterity bonus)
Class: Kensei

Since it's not a video game, I'm going old school abilities (^o^) I hope
the translator translates it accurately.

The biggest question I have is am I a real hero? I cowardly hid while
someone was being killed. My fingers was on L1 + R1 the whole time. I know
a do-over is possible, but I also know it's risky to mess with the
time-space continuum. What makes a hero? I got these powers for a reason.
It's destiny.

I question my heroism right now, and I hope I find my answer soon. Off to
New York!

In brightest day, in blackest night,
Hiro

P.S. I've been away from Japan for a full week now. I hope everyone's doing
well back home.

In the sunshine of your...
Current mood: restless

Claire finally got to meet her real mom and dad, which I think freaked her out a bit. I'm not sure she really got the answers she was looking for either, which is too bad. Maybe now she can just move on and embrace who she is. She needs to realize just how awesome it is to be unique, though I can imagine it's not as simple as that. It's difficult for me sometimes and I'm not even... special like she is.

In other news, I continue to search for that tape. Claire trusted me with it and I'm determined to find it, even if it takes me forever. I'm going to start from scratch and thoroughly search all the places I've already looked 1000 times.

Very little is new in my world, people are still freaked out about Brody. I heard he couldn't even remember what his name was. That just sounds insane to me... though I suppose stranger things... I guess he's going to be back at school for Homecoming, which won't make life any easier for Claire.

In a quick response to y'all:
Things is good [sic]. Thanks Kara, little Gabe looked great as a Moogle. I'm still not interested in Claire, trust me. And Happy (belated) Halloween to everyone! Oh, and err, thanks for the compliments... we're all beautiful people...

On The Web : Greg Beeman's Blog For Episode 1x06

Posted by HeroesFan on 2006/11/1 11:54:28 (633 reads)
On The Web

As usual Greg Beeman's latest blog entry is chalk full of behind-the-wcenes goodness. Any dedicated Heroes fan is sure to enjoy his stories from the director's chair and the candid photos that he shares.

Quote:
Tonight?s episode is the second episode that I directed. It was, by design, a smaller episode? It follows fewer characters and goes to fewer locations than the first 5. HEROES, as you hopefully can tell, is a big and relatively expensive TV show. To balance out the big episodes, Tim Kring and the writers have planned that there will be three or four smaller, less expensive ones which, effectively, offset the costs of the big ones.

Also, truthfully, we?re still learning what stories to tell and how to tell them. Do we always need to see the whole cast in just a handful of scenes? Or should we, sometimes, concentrate on just a few of our characters and give them more intensively developed stories.

...

We also learn that Niki's alter-ego is referred to as "Jessica" by the crew.

Quote:

Ali plays two characters in this episode. One, Niki, who is breaking down continuously and trying to hold it together while experiencing ever-escalating amounts of fear and trauma. Then, her alter-ego is introduced ? a cool and in-control character we call ?Jessica.?

On The Web : Why Does Heroes Grab Your Attention?

Posted by HeroesFan on 2006/10/31 17:22:41 (563 reads)
On The Web

Maggie over at tifaux says that Heroes is "not original .. not amazingly written .. and doesn't have any standout performances (other than Hiro)". Despite all of that, she attempt to pinpoint the reasons that the show has been so successful thus far.

Quote:

  • There's a lot of them. Just when you're getting pretty sick of Niki not knowing what's she's doing or Peter moping about or even (god forbid) Hiro giggling up every scene, we turn our attention to Bad Glasses Man or Matt or Nathan or Mohinder or Sylar. The story is so spread out, we're still introducing most of these characters.

  • They're familiar. Not familiar as in reminding you of your best friend, but culturally familiar. Hardly anyone watching Heroes probably actually knows an office drone in Tokyo or an internet stripper, but we absolutely believe that such people exist. Sure, she's an internet stripper ? so she must have a heart of gold. He's a smarmy politician ? he must want to cheat on his wife. It's comforting without hitting too close to home.

  • Lots of stuff happens. There's not a lot of soap-opery dragging of feet. There's a lot of action, whether it's cheerleaders being flayed or politicians leaping into the sky. It's fun to see people in constant motion, trying to deal with crazy stuff and keep a somewhat normal life.

  • We know what they know. Namely, that this stuff is really weird. But we're all in the same boat. Fun and communal-like.
It's not afraid of its own dorkiness. I like a show that embraces its genre. This is a superhero show, and no one's shying away from that, trying to make it into Six Feet Under. It is what it is.

Maggie goes on to rant about some other aspects of Heroes which she does not like, but I'll spare you.

On The Web : Graphic Novel Issue 6 - "Stolen Time"

On The Web

Don't forget to check out the latest issue of the Heroes online graphic novel. This week's webisode is Niki-centric and sheds some light on how she got her hands on the two million dollars. I think we can also make a connection and figure out who the buried skeloton(s) in the desert belonged to.

If you pay close attention you might find this little easter egg showing Peter with a bunch of doors. What does it mean? Are they locker doors? Could this be a glimps into the future?

On The Web : New weekly webcomic even when HEROES isn't airing!

Posted by Hero on 2006/10/30 21:39:29 (953 reads)
On The Web

Besides just the announcement of the new CBR interview, I thought the quote below was worthy of its own story. Again the source is the SPOILER-FILLED new interview with Coleite and Pokaski over at CBR, but here's the scoop (with some emphasis added by me):Quote:

Also with the online comics, when are they written? Are they planned out while an episode is being written, or after?

They are planned concurrently. We decide the best story to tell as it correlates with the episode. However, we just learned that the webcomics will be weekly, even when the show is off the air. So, check it out as we expand our pantheon and introduce new characters online.
Wild! New characters added outside of the TV show! It's like the Star Wars expanded universe...
