Reviews : Brian Lowry From Variety

Reviews

"If nothing else, credit NBC with this year's blindest -- and perhaps most ambitious -- leap into the serialized unknown, with a wild sci-fi premise that has cult hit potential but will need a heroic confluence of events to extend its appeal beyond that narrow core. Very little in "Heroes" is clear after the extra-long pilot -- indeed, even through three episodes -- which ask viewers to embark on an open-ended journey fraught with the threat of world annihilation, strange powers and talk of mutation toward a "next evolutionary step" that won't sit well with those convinced the Earth is only 6,000 years old."

Tim Kring : CBR interview with Tim Kring!

Posted by Hero on 2006/9/22 1:15:21 (808 reads)
Tim Kring

It's quite a long article!
Snippet:Quote:

It's a bizarre place. When my non-comics reading friends ask me about it I tell them to imagine a small city forms inside of this very large building and all the world's most interesting characters show up in one-place and they're celebrating Halloween and New Years at the same time. That's Comic-Con.

Speaking of comics, are there any plans for a comic book series to run concurrent or otherwise?

Yeah, we are doing 22 online comics that run concurrent with the show. Everybody who's anybody is involved with it. Michael Turner. Koi Turnbull. I know Jim Lee's involved. I know Tim Sale's involved. They'll be written internally by us, people like Aron Coleite ("The Covenant"), Jeph Loeb and Bryan Fuller ("Dead Like Me," "Wonderfalls"). They're going to be spectacular.

I'm looking at the first one right now. They will be both ancillary material and sort of additive material to the show, not necessarily a retelling, but a kind of different direction into the stories. In other words, if you read them, you will sort of have greater knowledge and deeper knowledge into what you're seeing.

Often times we'll be telling a story from another side, through another character, or will give the missing beats of a story that weren't told in the show - a character gets to a certain place and in the show you jumped him passed four or five different story beats, but you can see how he got there in the comic.

Those artists you mentioned, these are all artists who are friends with Jeph Loeb. Is he the primary driving force behind these online comics?

Yes, absolutely. The truth of the matter is that Tim Sale was actually brought onto the show before Jeph, although I got to Tim through Jeph, because Jeph and I have been friends for many, many eyars. When I called Jeph to talk about this early on, we had several conversations while I was writing the pilot, and I wanted to do some artwork in the script as a sales device. Just hire somebody out of my own pocket to do a few pieces for the script. And I asked Jeph to see if he could recommend somebody. He got me in touch with Tim and that's how that started. So, you know whether it was Tim's involvement or Jeph's involvement, and the fact that the show got a lot of buzz at Comic-Con, we were sort of on everybody's radar when we approached people. But certainly Jeph's knowledge of the business and the people in it - we couldn't ask for more.

Are there any plans to publish these comics in the real world?

I hope so. I'm hoping there's not legal issues with that. I'm looking at color Xeroxes of these things and I don't see why they wouldn't.

Thanks a lot, Tim. Pleasure speaking with you today.

The Buzz : A Couple Of Negative Reviews

Posted by HeroesFan on 2006/9/21 19:16:20 (800 reads)
The Buzz

Now that the pilot episode has pretty much saturated the various media outlets many bloggers and would be critics are reviewing the show. As is always the case, with the good comes the bad. This is a fan site and we do our best to promote the show in a positive way, though we will post negative news and reviews from time to time. If for no other reason than to give you links to places to go and leave comments rebuking the would be critic.

John Joseph Adams said:
Heroes isn't complete rubbish, and it seems like there's a lot of room for improvement after this very shaky start, but as it is now there's very little to recommend it. If you really want a superhero fix, go read some comics instead.

There is an article at Pass The Remote titled Holding Out for a Better 'Heroes' here is a snippit:
really wanted NBC's new drama Heroes (premieres Monday on NBC) to be extraordinary like the characters it profiles, but it fell short. The pacing kept this show from moving along and I found myself watching the clock at times, and not because I was trying to break the time/space continuum like one of the featured characters. Now, this was the pilot, and there was a lot of set-up involved, so it's very possible that subsequent episodes are much stronger.

When a show receives as much buzz as Heroes has over the past few months, it is only a matter of time before the critics and haters arrive on the scene. For some people the only way to get noticed is by tearing apart something that most people love.

On The Web : Hereos Pilot Commentary Track

Posted by HeroesFan on 2006/9/21 19:03:58 (1340 reads)
On The Web

You know those cool commentary tracks that come on most DVDs now days? The ones that you listen to while watching the movie so you can hear what the cast and crew has to say about the scenes as they happen? Well this is a take on that idea, except instead of a DVD this audio commentary goes along with the Pilot episode of Heroes.

Oh yeah .. and instead of the cast and crew giving us insight... it is just a couple of drunk guys babbling about the show.

A seemingly cool idea, not sure how it actually plays out in it's execution though.

Download the audio commentary here

Be warned there is a lot of foul language and low-brow humor

The Buzz : NBC Launches Heroes Radio Campaign

Posted by HeroesFan on 2006/9/21 12:40:27 (715 reads)

Instead of a single spot, the campaign, which runs through Sept. 24 on two to three Clear Channel stations in the top 25 markets, consists of a :60, three :05 ?adlets,? and one :15 spot. The :60 second spot runs at the end of a commercial pod, followed by the adlets within content during the next program segment, capped off by the :15 at the top of the next stopset. Ideally, all three segments run within a 15 to 30 minute period.

The spots ask the listener what it would be like to have supernatural powers and what powers those might be. The adlets introduce the Heroes characters? abilities and the final :15 spot provides the tune-in information.

On The Web : Serialized Dramas ... A Bad Thing?

Posted by HeroesFan on 2006/9/21 12:31:29 (766 reads)
On The Web

Richard Keller over at tvsquad has posted an article explaining why he feels that the majority of new serialized dramas on tv this season will fail. Pointing out that the new hot genre is the serialized drama and naming 'Heroes' by name, Keller makes his arguments for the failure of most of the new series.

After reading his article it is clear that Keller's main argument is that a serialized drama like Lost or Heroes requires acute attention from the audience. Keller goes on to explain that the audience simply does not have the time nor the brain power to keep up with the extensive plot lines and season long mysteries.

I suppose in Richard Keller's opinion the viewing audience is only intellectual enough to handle watching half hour sitcoms that don't require any type of thinking or commitment. What do you think?

Cast & Crew : Cast and Creators of Heroes Speak

Posted by HeroesFan on 2006/9/21 12:09:41 (878 reads)
Cast & Crew

Movieweb has a detailed transcription of a conference call with Masi Oka, Greg Grunberg and Tim Kring.

Here is a little snippit:

I was wondering if you could expound a little about what are the joys and the rewards and the perils of writing a serial show for such an ensemble cast. Do you have like the whole story mapped in your head and just paste the narration in chapters or so how will you go about it?

Tim Kring: One of the, you know, the challenges is obviously to keep a lot of stories going at the same time. That's a very, very big challenge. But, you know, one of the fun things is again, we do know where we're going but watching characters develop and taking them in places that even you didn't expect because the room is a very - the writers' room is a very interesting place because ideas morph and bend and become very different things when you start filtering through lots of people's ideas.

And the one frustrating thing about writing a big serialized show is that any change that you come up with has a kind of domino effect so you - it forces you to be very diligent about what you're trying to tell. And balancing how much story with how much character development is also a challenge. But so far, we seem to be finding more sort of treasures out of this than pitfalls.

Note: this is the same conference call that we talked about a little over a week ago.

The Buzz : Season 1 Villian Revealed

Posted by HeroesFan on 2006/9/19 12:06:47 (953 reads)
The Buzz

Timn Kring told SciFi Wire that there will be a season-long arc involving the hunt for a serial killer with super powers.

"We are bringing in other people with super powers, and they are not necessarily heroes," Kring said. "The show does introduce the concept of a major villain in the second episode, and that villain becomes a sort of a linchpin, a central character for most of the first season."

--- Possible Spoilers Highlight To Read ---
"He's recruited by this FBI agent, the character that Clea plays," Grunberg said. "They become this team, sort of like a Mulder and Scully of 'The X-Files.' And what's great is that this side of the story -- investigating the villain and trying to figure out who he is, what his motives are, why these people are being affected and what's going on -- what's great is, the audience will have a lot of these questions, and my character is going to discover them and hopefully answer those questions and be the eyes of the audience."

The heroes of "Heroes" may not remain good guys, Grunberg warned.

"Don't assume that every one of these characters is good," Grunberg said. "That's something so interesting. As actors, co-star Masi Oka and I have had this conversation where we're thinking, 'Are we going to be good? Are we going to realize, "Wow, these powers: They're empowering me to such a way that I can use it for evil purposes?' I mean, we have no idea whether we're going to go good, go bad. It's just so interesting to see what somebody would do given these abilities."
