An Interview with ‘Heroes’ star Greg Grunberg

Our friends at Titan Magazines sent us an excerpt of their interview with Heroes star Greg Grunberg from the new issue of the Official Heroes Magazine.

HEROES MAGAZINE: A few months ago, your childhood pal Jesse Alexander said you used to run a frozen yogurt delivery service. Even back then, were you harboring dreams of becoming a Hollywood actor?

GREG GRUNBERG: I’ve wanted to be an actor my whole life. Growing up, I would do community theater. In elementary school, I was Tom Sawyer [in a school show]. I was always that kid who wanted to either play sports or act, so I’ve always known I had the bug. I never thought of it as a career until I realized I had to take a chance on this. It was right after college that I decided now was the time. I opened a frozen yogurt store with my Dad on Melrose Avenue [in LA] I’ve always had the business bug in me. I was sharing an apartment with [Lost creator] J.J. Abrams and I didn’t know whether I was going to write or act. I was actually Joel Silver’s personal driver for a year. I was doing everything I could possibly do, so it was either take acting seriously now, or never.

Zachary Quinto : The Life and Times of Zachary Quinto

Zachary Quinto

Carnegie Mellon Today, Carnegie Mellon University's magazine, recently published an article about the life and career of Zachary Quinto, an alumnus of the university.

Quote:

A Star's Trek

It's September 2007, and just as he has been doing for the past couple of months while driving around Los Angeles, Zachary Quinto grabs a rubber band from the cup holder in the center console of his Toyota Prius. He wraps it around the ring finger and pinky of his right hand, binding them together. His left hand remains on the steering wheel. His right hand is now in rehearsal.

The actor is accustomed to doing whatever it takes to prepare for scenes—accents, intonation, attitude. His latest role requires muscle training, but not for bigger biceps. His ring finger and pinky need to stick together while parting from his forefinger and middle finger, which also must remain close. When done properly, the four fingers form a V. It's an essential part of the arm-raised, palm-out Vulcan salute, a signature characteristic of Mr. Spock, the character Quinto plays in the upcoming motion picture Star Trek.

The science-fiction franchise has already spawned 10 feature films and six television series dating to the 1960s, not to mention inspiring millions of "Trekkies" around the globe. Naturally, there has been plenty of hype for this Star Trek reboot, which revolves around the initial meeting of Spock and Captain Kirk. Months before advance screenings and the May 8 release date, New York Daily News movie critic Joe Neumaier picked the film as one of the "best bets on movies for 2009," and Toronto Star movie critic Peter Howell named it one of the "12 must see movies for '09."

If Star Trek turns into one of this summer's blockbusters, then the well-established television actor on NBC's drama Heroes will in all likelihood become a big-screen favorite, too. Quinto, whose fingers finally did get the hang of the Vulcan salute, seems nonplussed by it all. The work itself sustains him, he says while dining at a restaurant near the Carnegie Mellon campus. It's the kind of work he's been heading toward from a young age.

Quote:

Fuller says the final moments of the season 3 finale will set the stage for what's to come in the fall. "Basically, the last act of episode 25, similar to what's been done in the past, opens up a new chapter of Heroes. It sets up arcs for a variety of characters."

That's particularly true in the case of Claire, Fuller says. "We set all the pieces up in terms of Claire's attitude and what her trajectory is going to be in season 4. You will have a very strong idea by the end of this season's final episode where Claire is going and what's going to be happening with the Petrellis."

Episode Recaps : 'Heroes' Episode 3x17 - "Cold Wars" Recap

Episode Recaps

Volume IV: Fugitives
Chapter 4: Cold Wars

Apartment Building, Night: Matt and Mohinder are walking toward a car that's just pulled in. Mohinder has reservations about what they're doing. Peter gets out of the car. He's got the phenobarbital, but he doesn't understand why Matt doesn't just read Bennet's mind. Bennet's been trained, and they need to get creative.

Hotel Bar: A replay of last episode's ending scene, Bennet at the bar.

Motel Room: Bennet's been tied to a chair and has a tube stuck in his arm. Peter and Mohinder sit around while Matt concentrates on Bennet. It's working.

Park Bench, Five Weeks Previous: Noah drinks from a coffee cup. Angela, wearing dark clothes and glasses, sits down beside him. He tells her about a spontaneous fire in which seven people died. They need to get back to work. Angela believes Primatech's time has passed. She hands him an envelope. It's his pension and severance from Primatech. She also hands him a box from her. It's got a very nice watch in it. Noah believes the company still has a place, but Angela's tired and all she wants is to try to put her family back together. Noah should do the same. All Noah knows is the company, though. He looks uncertain. Angela leaves.

Motel Room: Matt releases Bennet. Peter and Mohinder are still hesitant, but Matt is determined.

Building 26: Danko has pulled Nathan away from a state dinner. He's not happy about it, but Danko's concerned about Bennet, who has disappeared. Nathan asks about Claire, but she's fine. Danko orders info from surveillance on Bennet, and Nathan's surprised Danko spies on his own men, including Nathan himself. Danko considers Nathan and Noah compromised by their ties to Peter and Claire.

Motel Room: Peter wants Matt to hurry. Matt can't rush his interrogation. Mohinder considers their actions torture because of what Matt's digging is doing to Noah's system. He thinks Matt's out for revenge against those who killed Daphne. Matt doesn't believe what he's doing is as bad as what they did to him. Mohinder reminds him that he's supposed to be better than they are. They don't know anything, and Noah knows everything. Matt has to go back in, and after Peter checks Noah's pulse, Peter reluctantly agrees with him.

Bennet House, Four Weeks Ago: Noah sits on the couch, doing the newspaper crossword. Sandra walks by and gives him a word. They're supposed to be ready for dinner with a couple from the PTA at Lyle's school soon. Noah looks uncomfortable. Sandra places his coffee cup, which has been left on the end table, on a coaster and tells him it's nice to have him around before she heads upstairs. Someone knocks on the door and Noah opens it to find Nathan. They exchange a few awkward words about Claire before Nathan asks for some privacy to talk. Nathan follows Noah into an office. Nathan wants to gather up everyone with abilities, although he and Claire will be exceptions, and use the resources of the U.S. government to find a way to remove their powers. Nathan's abilities were given to him, they must be able to be taken away. Noah points out that he's going to be seen as a villain. Nathan will play whatever role he has to. He went too far with his father and almost killed his own brother trying to give everyone powers. Now he figures the only sensible thing to do is make sure no one has them, and he's come to take advantage of Noah's twenty years of experience tracking specials. Noah takes Nathan to a storage locker secured by a lock with "7957" as the combination. Inside are file boxes and weapons. Noah wants in. Although he's enjoyed his time with his family, there are only so many crossword puzzles he can do.

Motel Room: Matt's furious that Noah and Nathan planned everything together. Peter tried to stop him and failed and now they don't know what to do. Mohinder doesn't think memories will help them. He and Matt argue. Mohinder thinks he deserves to be hunted after all he's done. Noah gains some semblance of consciousness, but continues to act drugged. Matt figures that if Mohinder wants to go, he should go to Noah's storage locker. It's got guns, money, everything they need. Matt writes out the address and combination, but Peter takes the page and tells them not to kill each other while he's gone. Matt and Mohinder are left glaring at each other.

Storage Facility, Night: Peter opens the lock and goes through some boxes. He finds the case of guns and tools. A camera in a concealed vent watches him.

Building 26: An agent calls Danko's attention to the feed from the hidden camera. Danko is pleased. Nathan is summoned and watches his brother loot Bennet's storage space. A local team is on their way to deal with Peter. Nathan just wants him caught. Danko points out that he's in a room stuffed with guns, but radios his men that they're to take Peter without bloodshed. The camera feed goes black, and Danko orders his men to move in.

Storage Facility: The team approaches the space, covering the door with their tranquillizer guns. One of them opens the door, but before they can enter, a flash grenade bounces out of the room into their midst. It blinds them long enough for Peter to zoom out of their trap.

Motel Room: Mohinder and Matt are getting worried that Peter's been gone so long. Noah tells them it's because he's been captured. Noah was supposed to check in, and his silence has been noticed. Mohinder starts to gather up things, getting ready to run. Matt thinks it's a trick and wants to know who Noah's working with. When Noah refuses to tell or show him, Matt uses his power.

Building 26, Three weeks ago: Nathan and Bennet enter. Danko is directing the set up of the command center. Bennet tries to tell them how Primatech did things, but Danko's not interested. Instead of one of us, one of them, it's going to be twelve or twenty of us and none of them. Danko points out that Primatech's methods resulted in trouble and escapes. This operation is going to be about "us" and "them." Noah thought he was going to be in charge of the operation. Nathan tries to defuse the situation, but Noah realizes he's no longer important.

Mohinder's Cab: Bennet gets in. Mohinder's not happy to see him. Noah spills the news about Nathan's program, and his belief that it's going to blow up in their faces. He needs Mohinder's strength and his intelligence to help people, to save lives.

Motel Room: Matt's angry now that Mohinder said nothing about meeting with Bennet. Obviously, Mohinder's been against Matt's mind probe of Bennet because he was afraid of what Matt would find. Matt throws Mohinder into a mirror, breaking it into shards. Noah eyes one close to hand. Mohinder throws Matt across the room into another mirror and then pins him. Matt's not thinking straight: if Mohinder had told Matt, he couldn't have prevented Daphne's death, and it would have been him tied up in the chair. They look toward the chair, but Bennet's no longer in it. They rush outside and split up, Matt taking the front of the motel, Mohinder checking the back. While Matt searches frantically, Noah hides behind a car. Once Matt's out of sight, Noah grabs a radio antenna, bends it into a hook and jimmies the lock on the car door. He slips behind the wheel, keeping low, and starts to hotwire the car. He's almost got it when Peter lands on the windshield, looks in and sees him. They drag him back to the motel room and duct tape him down. Matt's going to get their answers without the drugs. Noah's going to feel everything. Noah warns them they don't have much time, that the government will find them. Mohinder thinks they should leave, but Matt thinks Mohinder doesn't deserve input. Matt explains to Peter, and Mohinder and Matt get shouting at each other again. Peter urges Matt to get back to work. Matt demands to know who Bennet's working for, and mentally probes Bennet hard.

Washington, One Week Ago: Bennet checks an address on a slip of paper and knocks on the door of apartment #9. Danko opens it with a gun in his hand. The apartment is sparse, floor bare, walls unadorned. A computer with active monitors looks like the only thing ever used. Bennet enters and pulls a bottle with glasses from a bag. He figures, since they're going to be working together, it's a good idea for them to get to know where the other guy is coming from. Danko's suspicious and almost hostile. He knows all about Bennet, people like Bennet are a dime a dozen and eleven of the twelve are unreliable. Noah tries to laugh off the criticism. Danko knows Bennet's been split between being a company man and a family man, but winning the war they face is going to take focus. Bennet's read Danko's file too: completely focussed. The job requires understanding the target's humanity, and you have to be human to manage that. Danko demands to know if, when they engage the enemy, Bennet's going to take orders, or undermine Danko. Bennet insists Danko's the boss.

Motel Room: Matt breaks off and scribbles down Danko's address. Peter takes it and a gun. Matt figures this is what they're after, someone they can use to cripple the operation. Bennet tries to convince Peter not to go after Danko because he doesn't understand enough. Peter leaves. Outside the motel, a van of riflemen skids to a stop.

Danko's Apartment: Danko enters, talking on a cell phone. He's co-ordinating the attack, and fires up his computer to get some eyes on the scene. Peter cocks the gun behind him and suggests that, next time, Danko lock his windows.

Building 26: Nathan's been summoned by an agent, who's been monitoring the activity in Danko's apartment. The agent has been waiting for Nathan's order to mobilize a unit. Nathan walks away.

Danko's Apartment: Danko carefully sets down his phone and raises his hands. He recognizes Peter and, moving slowly, places his forehead against the gun. Danko doesn't want to die, but Peter came there with a mission and Danko insists he get it over with. Then he'll get what he wants: everyone will realize Danko is right, that specials are dangerous. Nathan appears from around a corner and tries to convince Peter to put down the gun. Peter shoots Danko in the arm. Nathan backs off. Danko, holding his arm, points out that Peter can't trust either of them. Nathan tells Peter about Matt and Mohinder. If Peter kills Danko, then Matt and Mo are as good as dead. Peter lowers the gun, runs to the window and flies away. Danko's furious that Nathan told Peter about the threat to Matt and Mohinder. He grabs his phone and orders the team into action.

The team swarms the hotel, busting down doors at random. Matt, Mohinder and Bennet hear the noise. Mohinder recommends they make a break for it. Matt grabs his gun and aims at Bennet. Bennet had a chance to stop hunting them and didn't. For that, he's going to pay. Bennet shouts that Daphne's alive, that they have her. Bennet offers to prove it by letting Matt into his head. Mohinder promises to hold them off while Matt's inside. Matt agrees.

Building 26, two days ago: Bennet and Danko check bodybags, dead from the airplane crash. Bennet's furious. One of them is alive, though, Daphne is groaning with her gunshot wound. Bennet puts a needle in her I.V. It takes three times as much sedative to keep her down as it would a normal person.

Exterior, Motel: Mohinder punches out one rifleman, then throws another across a car. He shouts for all of them to come after them. Dart after dart hits him, but he manages to stagger on, finally falling. Matt hears them begin pounding on doors again. Bennet tries to convince him he's not a killer. The riflemen bust in and Matt eventually puts the gun down. The riflemen hook him up to the drugs. Bennet insists they not hurt him, and that Bennet himself walk Matt out. He does, but a flash grenade lands at his feet and while everyone is blinded, Peter zooms in, grabs Matt, and zooms away.

Building 26 Cell: Mohinder's chained in a chair, his manacles double reinforced. Someone wakes him up by throwing a bucket of water over him. Nathan walks into the room. What Matt, Peter and Mohinder did encouraged the hard-liners who think that those with powers should be killed. The plane that crashed was taking them to a holding facility, where they were going to be kept while a way was found to remove their powers. Nathan needs Mohinder's help. He shows Mohinder a video of Daphne, who's still on a hospital gurney. If Mohinder doesn't help, if Nathan doesn't have results to show the hard-liners in the program, then Mohinder, Matt, Daphne, Peter... all of them will end up being killed. Nathan leaves Mohinder to think about it.

Building 26, Exterior Night: Danko and Bennet walk. Danko recommends Bennet take some time off. Bennet figures he's been kicked out of his house and his daughter's terrified of him, so what's he going to do with time off? No. He no longer has a split focus. He's all job now. Danko figures Matt, Mohinder and Peter got away because of their standing orders to treat the targets with kid gloves. Danko wants to change that. Bennet agrees to be part of that. Danko gets into a black SUV and drives off. Bennet turns around and walks over to a park bench where Angela Petrelli sits. Bennet thinks things went pretty well. Angela points out that Danko trusts no-one, that he'll continue to test Bennet. Danko and Nathan have it all wrong, so Bennet's prepared to be tested. He's going to have to do some bad things to prove he's loyal to the cause. Bennet smiles. He's okay with morally grey areas. He gets up and walks away, leaving a box on the bench behind him. Angela opens it to find the watch she had given him for retirement. She smiles.

Isaac's Old Loft, Soho: Matt comes out of his trance while Peter watches. He's surrounded by paintings. They show him wearing a vest wired with explosives. He starts to panic. All he wants is to find Daphne. He doesn't want to hurt anyone. Peter tries to convince him that he's not capable of mass murder, but Matt points out a painting on the floor that has taken the place of the New York detonation. It shows a mushroom cloud rising over Washington.

Heroes News : 'Heroes' Gets a Fourth Season

NBC: 'Heroes' will continue next season

Network will order 18-20 episodes next season

NBC plans to bring back "Heroes" for another season, said entertainment president Angela Bromstad.

The action-drama's ratings decline has caused some media reports to speculate as to whether the show will return next fall. As part of Hollywood Reporter's annual Q&As with the five broadcast network chiefs, Bromstad was asked if "Heroes" could be considered "on the bubble" for a renewal.

"No," she said, and added that the network plans to order 18-20 episodes of the show for next season.

That's fewer hours than "Heroes" first or current third season (which each had orders of at least 23 episodes), with season two having been cut short due to the writers strike.

For all its headline-making audience erosion, "Heroes" is still tied with NBC's "The Office" as the network's top-rated series among adults 18-49 this season.

Greg Grunberg : 'Heroes' Ending For Good? Greg Grungerg's Tweet Sparks Online Frenzy

Greg Grunberg

Quote:

Grunberg sent a message to fans via his Twitter account Sunday that caused many to fear the show was ending after its current season. "Winding down shooting Season 3 Heroes," he wrote. "Tough to say goodbye to crew not knowing if any or all of us will return next year. Hope all."

The firestorm the comments caused quickly earned a response from Grunberg, who qualified his remarks. "Don't get me wrong, Heroes IS coming back next year, but some crew take other jobs, so it's tough," he wrote.

The fans concern about Grunberg's comments isn't without reason. The series earned critical praise and rabid fan adoration during its first seasons, but has very publicly floundered — both creatively and in viewership — ever since. It hit an all-time series low of just below 7 million viewers a week ago, a number it matched with Monday's episode.

An NBC spokesperson had no comment on Grunberg's statements, but Angela Bromstad, NBC's president of primetime entertainment, said the show was "very secure" during the Television Critics Association winter press tour in January. No official renewal has been announced.
