Part 1: Four Months Ago
Monroe Apartment, Montreal: In a replay of last episode, Peter calls for Caitlin, then frantically concentrates, trying to get back to the future. He hears a noise and fires a lightning bolt in its direction. The bolt strikes a hand, which burns and then heals. The hand belongs to Adam Monroe/Takezo Kensai, who steps into the room. Peter doesn't remember him, and Adam figures the Haitian has worked his magic. There is a way to reverse it, however: Peter can heal like Adam, heal his own brain. He just has to concentrate on something important to him. Peter pulls out the picture of he and Nathan together. Adam gives him Nathan's name, which sparks a memory transporting us back in time to four months ago.
Kirby Plaza, New York: Nathan carries Peter into the sky while Peter flares and sparks with out-of-control radiation. He begs Nathan, who is blistering from the heat, to let him go. Nathan can fly. Peter can't because it's taking all his concentration not to blow up. He tears himself from Nathan's grasp and falls. Nathan tries to catch him, but Peter detonates, blasting Nathan back and knocking him out. As Nathan falls to Earth, Peter zooms out of nowhere, already healing from his explosion, to catch him.
Roosevelt Hospital, Manhattan: Niki and Micah are in a waiting room when a doctor appears. The bullet missed D.L.'s heart by an inch, but he's going to live. Overjoyed, Niki throws her arms around the doctor while Micah breaks into a smile.
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic: Alejandro exits a church with his bride on his arm. Around them the village has gathered and is throwing rice. Maya is in the crowd, but a contrast to the happy couple. At the party later that night, she dances with her brother while his bride dances with an ex-boyfriend. Maya doesn't trust her, doesn't want her part of the family. Alejandro tries to calm his sister's fears, but fails. Bride and ex-boyfriend walk away from the gathering. Maya wanders off as well, upset. She finds herself outside of a storehouse, crying and unaware that her tears have turned black. She hears a noise from inside and opens the door to discover Alejandro's wife and her ex in a compromising position. The ex-boyfriend demands she keep quiet about what she's seen, but Maya refuses. The boyfriend grows violent, and Maya's eyes blacken for the first time. The bride and boyfriend collapse, bleeding black tears. Maya runs out into the street to discover that everyone else in the village has collapsed as well. She finds Alejandro, the only person still standing. She doesn't understand what's happened, but knows that she's somehow responsible, and that all those people are dead. She runs off, leaving Alejandro calling after her.
Roosevelt Hospital Emergency Ward: Peter enters with Nathan over his shoulder, yelling for help. Doctors and nurses scramble while Peter sets Nathan on a gurney. Peter wraps a blanket around himself and his singed clothing, shivering as he does so. A policeman approaches, but he's distracted for a moment and Peter turns invisible as he walks away. He returns to visibility in a distant hallway, but has not taken more than a few steps when Elle, the blond who killed/will kill Ricky steps out of an intersecting passage and blasts Peter with lightning. As Peter falls, Bob steps out of the passage as well. Elle shouldn't have used a full blast, but she figures Peter can take it.
Office, Company Facility: Peter wakes up with Elle running her finger through his hair. She zaps him on the nose and he sits up suddenly to find himself on a couch with Bob standing nearby. Bob's an old friend of Peter's parents, and the facility is a safe place. Nathan has the finest doctors working on him, but he's still in jeopardy. Elle rubs his shoulders and curls his hair around a finger. It's Peter's fault, and they know he was going to take out half of New York before Nathan airlifted him away. He's dangerous as long as his powers are not under his control. He's safe because they've shut down his powers. Peter tries and fails to move a glass by telekinesis. The Haitian enters the room. He can shut down the powers of anyone near him. Thirty years ago, they had to stop research into a vaccine that would shut down his powers for good and prevent him from becoming a danger to himself or anyone else. Recently, they've been able to restart the program. Peter wants to know when it's ready, and Bob and Elle take that as volunteering for the program.
Hospital Room: Angela Petrelli stands over Nathan, who comes awake. She's shaken by what she sees. Nathan asks about Peter, but he's missing and the Coast Guard is searching the ocean for him. Nathan's lucky to be alive. Nathan raises his bed up and tries to look in a mirror. At first Angela stands in his way, but then steps aside, letting Nathan see how the explosion horribly burned every inch of his skin.
Another Hospital Room: Niki and Micah rush to D.L.'s bedside. She has a few moments with her reunited family before the doctor calls her out of the room. She tries to explain that they have no insurance, but she'll find a way to pay. The bill's been taken care of by Bob, who appears beside the doctor. He and Niki walk down the hall. There's been no mention of last night's events in Kirby Plaza, or the death of Linderman. Niki grows nervous. Linderman made a mess of things and Bob's there to right the ship. He's there to help, not just with the bill, but with Niki's illness. Jessica may be gone, but powers sometimes cause fractures, and another personality may emerge. To protect her family, Niki will have to give them up and enter the program. There's medicine that she could take at home, but there are side effects that could cost her everything she's spent so long fighting for.
A Cell: Elle cuts Peter's hair while Peter contemplates a cup full of pills. They'll stifle his powers in much the same way the Haitian does. Elle gets him a cup of water, and he downs the pills. Elle says goodbye, but before she leaves the room, she zaps him in the head. It hurts, but he'll get used to it and then he'll start to like it. After she leaves, Peter hears a voice from a vent in the wall of his cell. It's Kensai.
Part 2: Three Months Ago
Sanders House, Las Vegas: Micah blows out 11 candles on a 9th Wonders themed birthday cake (the cake shows the cover of issue #10, St. Joan). Niki seems distracted. Micah's supposed to keep his wish to himself, but his parents already know what he wants: he could get the car radio tuned to the police band, and they could go out super-heroing. D.L. shoots down that idea. He's going to be a hero to Micah anyway: he's got a good job, although he's not telling Micah or Niki what. Instead he sends Micah to get his jacket. D.L. promised to take him bowling. Niki looks spaced. She can't even smile at her son on his birthday. D.L assures her the medicine will level out and things will get better. He leaves, and Niki goes inside, opens her pill bottle, and dumps the contents down the drain.
Adjoining Cells, Company Facility: Adam tries to get Peter to talk, to tell Adam his name, but Peter just wants to be left alone. Adam understands: Peter discovered he could do amazing things, and then something terrible happened and he realized he was dangerous. Adam's been in there for three decades. Peter figures that if they leave him in there forever, that's fine. Adam understand that too, and he's sorry. Peter finally gives up his name.
Part 3: Two Months Ago
Company Cell: Elle enters with Peter's pills. She cuddles up to him where he sits on the bed. Peter's not in the mood, but she promises to up his dose and he agrees to “only a small one.” He puts his hand out and she shocks him, enjoying his grunt of pain. He takes his pills and complains that he knows nothing about her. She doesn't tell him anything until he taunts her about how much she enjoys being in control. She accidentally burned her grandmother's house down when she was six. Caused a blackout in four Ohio counties when she was eight. She spent her ninth birthday in a glass room with a lithium I.V. in her arm. She's lived in the facility for sixteen years since psychiatrists diagnosed her as a sociopath with paranoid delusions, but they were just out to get her because she wanted to kill them. She's twenty-four and she's never been on a date, or a roller coaster, and never gone swimming. She gives him a smile as she leaves. Adam warns him about getting involved. He gave into her six years ago and he's still paying the price. Peter still believes they want to cure them, but Adam shows him that the place is a prison and dares him to try to get out.
Hospital: Angela opens Nathan's door and sees Heidi standing at his bedside. She backs out gracefully. Heidi enters the corridor a moment later, looking upset. Nathan's told her everything about what happened to him and Peter and the car crash (the one that crippled her, or is a car crash the cover story for Peter's boom?). She thinks it's due to the pain medication. Angela shakes her head at the idea, dismissing Nathan's story as the result of his father's inherited insanity: delusions of grandeur and suicidal tendencies. Angela, on the edge of tears, touches Heidi's arm (power use here?) and asks for a promise that she will keep Nathan's illness a secret. Heidi nods.
Sanders House, Las Vegas: Niki practices a car sales pitch before her mirror. She's starting a new job today. D.L. enters. He's proud of her. He knew the medication would work. He leaves to drive Micah to school, kissing her good-bye and wishing her a good day at work. As he leaves, Niki hears a voice from her mirror. It's not Jessica, it's Gina, a personality from that summer when she ran away to L.A. Gina's going to L.A. now to have some fun. Niki figures she can handle Gina, but Gina's the one who's kept her from taking her meds. She walks away in Niki's body, leaving Niki trapped in the mirror.
Cell: Peter asks Bob to see his family just for a day or two. They think he's dead, and he'd like to change that. Bob thinks that'd be fine, just not right now. Peter offers to take more drugs, to accept an escort, even Elle. Bob declines. Definitely not Elle. It's best for Peter and everyone else that Peter remain right where he is. Bob leaves. Adam was right. They're keeping them in prison because they can save the world. Thirty years ago, Adam tried to go public with his powers so he could use his blood to heal people. “They” couldn't allow that. They locked him up because there doesn't seem to be any way to kill him. Adam could cure Nathan using a small amount of his blood, if Peter could get him out. He blames Peter for what happened to Nathan, and convinces Peter to try an escape.
A House Fire, Las Vegas: A woman comes out of the fire, screaming that her daughter is still inside. D.L. charges into the house. Something explodes a moment later, but D.L. appears, having phased through the fire and the walls of the house carrying a girl. A few of the other firemen appear to have seen his exit, and look confused and troubled, but soon they join in the applause being offered by the spectators. Some time later, Micah watches the newscast of the fire. His dad enters, and Micah shows his excitement: his dad's a hero. D.L. wonders where Niki is, but Micah figures she hasn't come home from work yet. D.L. wonders if something's wrong and wanders into the bedroom looking for clues. He finds “Gone to L.A. C-Ya” written on the bedroom mirror in lipstick. He figures it's Jessica.
Part 3: One Month Ago
Cell: Elle enters, bringing Peter his pills and water. She turns to leave without shocking him and Peter stops her. He's starting to like it. She obliges, and he pulls her onto the bed, kissing her. She shocks him with her lips. Peter gets up to take his pills. They've had enough fun for one day, and Elle leaves. Peter waits until she's gone, then spits up the pills and flushes them down the toilet. It's been five days without the pills. Adam thinks it's time for him to try to break out. Peter puts his hands against the wall and concentrates. Nothing happens, but Adam encourages him to try again. This time, Peter's hands sink into the wall (Peter never actually met D.L. The closest they got to each other was in Kirby Plaza. Must have been close enough. I wonder how close Peter has to be to someone? How many powers could he pick up just walking through a crowd?). He walks into Adam's cell, surprised that Adam looks so good for being four hundred years old. Adam chuckles, then puts a hand on Peter's shoulder. They walk out of the facility on their way to heal Peter's brother.
A Church, Zulia, Venezuela: Maya, in a nun's habit, prays before a statue of Jesus. Alejandro enters. He's finally found her, and it's time for her to come home. Everyone wants to know how she poisoned the village. Maya denies it was poison. It was something evil inside her, and Alejandro was the only one it didn't affect, so it must be something about the two of them. Regardless, Alejandro still wants to help her. He signals for a policeman to enter. The policeman pulls out handcuffs and gets ready to take Maya into custody. Alejandro believes it's for the best, but Maya resists. She struggles and her eyes blacken. The cop falls to the floor, and Alejandro seizes her hands, trying to understand what's happening. He absorbs her poison through his touch, and realizes she's right. They flee the church.
Los Angeles Nightclub: D.L. finds Gina dancing with a man who's just finished giving her cocaine. D.L. calls her Jessica, but she denies it. The dealer tries to send D.L. away, but D.L. pulls out a picture of them with Micah and shows it to both Gina and the dealer. She's his wife. The dealer tries to punch D.L, but D.L. phases and the fist passes harmlessly through his head. In retaliation, D.L. floors the dealer with a punch to the stomach. Gina studies the picture of her family, and it's enough to bring Niki out. Niki has no idea where she is or what she's doing. D.L. puts a jacket around her and leads her out of the club. As they're climbing down stairs outside the dance room, the dealer comes up to D.L., pulls out a gun and presses it against his chest before pulling the trigger. Blood sprays Niki who stands in shock while the dealer escapes. People scream.
Part 4: Three Weeks Ago
Sanders House, Las Vegas: D.L.'s wake begins to break up. Micah stares hopelessly at D.L.'s medal of valor from his rescue. Nana, Monica and Damon say their goodbyes, promising that they'll help with whatever Niki needs. She needs to get help. Nana, Monica and Damon leave the house, passing Bob who approaches Niki with a sympathetic look. Niki returns it with a smile and a nod.
Hospital Room: Peter and Adam enter to find Nathan unconscious in his bed. Adam's got everything arranged: plane tickets, money, everything. Peter stands over the bed, disturbed by the horrible condition of his brother's body, and apologizes. Adam pulls out a syringe and draws blood from himself before injecting it into Nathan's I.V. bag. (Healing power or not, what if Adam's blood is the wrong type?). They don't have time to see how it will work. The Company knows Peter will come for his brother, and Nathan's room is the first place they'll look. Adam urges Peter to leave, but Nathan's wounds are already healing. Peter stops long enough to pull the picture of he and Nathan at Nathan's wedding from its frame on a shelf near the bed, then follows Adam out the door. Adam hands him a passport and plane ticket. They're to meet at a warehouse in Montreal. Before they can complete their plans, they spot Elle and the Haitian coming for them. They break for it, splitting up. Elle drops Adam with a lightning bolt. Although she hits Peter too, she succeeds only in setting fire to his jacket. She sends the Haitian after Peter while she deals with Adam.
The Haitian chases Peter into a dockyard full of containers and catches him near the mouth of an open one. Peter tries to use his powers, but the Haitian blocks them (how come Elle could use hers?). They fight, and the Haitian quickly handcuffs Peter to the inside of the open container. Peter refuses to go back, but the Haitian doesn't want to take him back. Peter's mother helped him, and now he's going to help Peter. Peter deserves a new life. He hangs his half-helix symbol necklace around Peter's neck, wishes him good luck, then takes his memory of everything.
Hospital Room: Angela enters to find Nathan, fully healed, standing at the window looking out at the city.
Part 5: Today
Maya and Sylar, with Alejandro sleeping in the back of the car, drive toward New York.
Niki thanks Bob and then walks out of the company facility. Bob watches her go with an expression that might by sympathy on his face.
Nathan gets out of a cab in front of the Wandering Rocks pub.
Peter staggers back, still holding the picture of himself and Nathan. He remembers everything. Adam's pleased. They're ready to save the world.
