Heroes News : Nielsen Ratings Don't Include Online Viewing

Heroes News

How do you watch Heroes? Do you download the episode from iTunes and watch on your iPod or computer? Do you stream it from NBC? If so, then you are not included in the weekly ratings count. Of course most of us aren't included anyway as Nielsen uses a sample audience of around 40,000 viewers. Still with the viewership of online streams and downloads growing you would think that the networks would start thinking about new methods of viewership tracking.

Networkworld has an article talking about this issue:

Quote:

If everyone started watching "24" or "CSI" on video iPods or streamed over the Internet - instead of on TV in their living rooms - these top-rated shows would probably go the way of "Cop Rock".

That is, Jack Bauer would become the victim of, not terrorists, but bad ratings. This is because Nielsen Media Research cannot collect data about what people watch on handheld video-viewing gadgets or from PCs streaming network TV shows. While Nielsen estimates around 90% of TV viewing still happens in homes, it's this burgeoning 10% that TV networks and advertisers are desperate to delve into.

I've never liked Nielsen Ratings system............to many variables in the hypothesis of that theory for it to even come close to scientific law...........and too many damn good shows have been cancelled because of it!!

Totally agree Gargy, it is so lame that Nielsen's pretty much choose which shows live and which shows die.

The record business execs are jumping out of windows because they didn't have the foresight to believe that P2P filesharing or legit music downloads would be the wave of the future.

Now...it is happening with TV and movies. I record Heroes on my DVR, but I keep an archive of the shows by downloading with a bitTorrent client.

It is only a matter of time before the Nielsen Ratings execs are jumping out of windows because their jobs will not be necessary.

In the meantime...Keep watching Heroes!

The majority of my friends (I would say around 90%) re-watch Heroes, Lost, etc on the internet with these tv streaming sites you're talking about. I know me personally, I go here to watch Heroes online, and they already have the 2 episodes up which only came out yesterday night!

Sad thing is, I don't think these corporate people will realize until it starts affecting their money intake. Oh well

And I agree with mephisto; Heroes is the best! (Do you play Diablo 2 by chance mephisto? )
